Tariff Authority for Major Ports or TAMP के।
constructing 11 more berths

Adanis, this has been a long, patient wait but is perfectly aligned to their aspirations of becoming a large player across both east and west coast of the country. APSEZ, listed on the exchanges, is 75 per cent owned by Adani Enterprises, the Gautam Adani bell weather. The company already operates 3 ports - all in the home state of its billionaire owner --- in Dahej, Hazira and Mundra, its jewel in the crown and post this acquisition will help achieve its target of ramping up its total capacity to over 200 million tonnes by 2020, making it the leading private sector port operator in the country.

Adani's family company also runs a coal loading terminal at Abbot Point in Queensland, Australia. APSEZ has been spreading its wings outside Gujarat with new operations in Mormugao, Vizag and Kandla.

But Dhamra will be its biggest success so far on the eastern sea board.

On Thursday, the company announced that its consolidated profit after tax (PAT) for the fourth quarter of 2013-14 increased by 43 per cent to Rs.530 crore from Rs.370 crore in the same period last year.

The race to acquire Dhamra had seen many local and global players line up but APSEZ always had the highest bid and the edge. Negotiations took that long as Tatas have been debating the strategic intent of the port and have been asking for a preferential treatment for its cargo, said officials in the know. For months now, Adanis have been manning the ports themselves as "consultants."

"It was a done deal save for last minute negotiations. The wait was whether we should announce it in this fiscal or the next. It was all about timing. We have found one," said an official in the know on condition of anonymity as he is not supposed to speak to media.

The importance of Dhamra Port could be gauged by the fact that it would serve the proposed $12 billion Posco Steel Plant of South Korea and for exporting iron ore from a nearly mineral belt. Besides, Odisha also plans to develop a shipbuilding yard, a gas-based manufacturing hub and a petro-chemical complex, besides a Special Investment Region. Tata Steel's Kalinganagar is due to produce 3 million tonnes in phase I which will be doubled.
